A Heartbreaking Update on Smudge the Kitten

Smudge Has Passed: A Heartbreaking Update From a Family Surrounded by Love
We’re saddened to share an update many in town were hoping they wouldn’t hear: Smudge, the kitten who captured the hearts of so many in Blackstone, passed away this morning.
Ashley Ryan, mother of Ray and Bella, let us know that Smudge was just too sick despite finally starting the exact treatment needed yesterday. The family was holding onto hope — but his little body couldn’t fight anymore. “The kids are a mess,” Ashley shared. “Ray is taking this extremely hard.”
Ray and Smudge shared a special bond. Smudge wasn’t just a pet — he was Ray’s companion, emotional support, and closest friend. When Smudge became seriously ill, the town of Blackstone stepped up in a way that deeply moved the family.
From Isabella (Bella) King and Sabrina Cordell’s lemonade stand fundraiser, to the additional efforts from local friends Jasmine Zincone, Bryson Huffaker, and Kellan Rodrick — the wave of kindness grew fast. Kids gave their time, made signs, baked cookies, poured fruit punch, and stood out in the heat, all to help one little cat who meant the world to their friend.
Even Blackstone’s community police dog, Captain, made a visit to show support.
Ashley told Small Town Post:
“This town went above and beyond. Thank you so much for helping us share our story. How thankful we are… how genuine this town is… we are just so very thankful.”
Despite the heartbreak, the family wants the community to know how deeply grateful they are. In the days leading up to Smudge’s passing, Blackstone neighbors showed up in incredible ways — visiting the kids’ lemonade and cookie stands, making generous donations, and offering kind words that meant the world to the family.
Ashley shared that people truly went above and beyond. From kids organizing fundraisers to strangers stopping by with smiles and support, the outpouring of care brought light during some of the darkest moments.
Though Smudge is gone, the community’s love will not be forgotten. In the hardest of times, Blackstone showed exactly what makes it special — people coming together, uniting around a family in pain, and trying to make a difference however they could.
At Small Town Post, we believe the most powerful stories are the ones that come from the heart. We’re honored to have helped share Smudge’s journey, and to highlight the genuine kindness that lives in our neighborhoods.
