Blackstone Valley Bakery Launches Home-Based Sourdough Bakery on County Street

From Starter to Spotlight: Blackstone Valley Bakery Brings Homemade Sourdough to Town
On May 17, excitement bubbled up across Blackstone’s local Facebook groups as a new post announced something fresh: the grand opening of Blackstone Valley Bakery, a micro sourdough bakery operating right out of a local home.
“Hello Blackstone! We are excited to announce our Grand Opening of Blackstone Valley Bakery—a micro sourdough bakery!”
The post introduced the town to a new cottage food licensed home bakery offering sourdough breads and desserts made with locally sourced ingredients. The buzz was immediate. Residents expressed excitement about having a small, locally run bakery right in their own neighborhood.
Just two days later, on Monday, May 19, the bakery opened with a first-come, first-serve porch pickup at 22 County Street in Blackstone, featuring:
- Mini Sourdough Original Artisan Loaves – $6
- Oatmeal Cookies with Maple Frosting (using syrup from Sturbridge, MA) – $2
Payment is simple with cash or Venmo—info is available on-site.
For a small town that loves its local flavor, the response was instant. And behind this homegrown bakery are two names residents will soon get to know: Nate and Emily Bach.
A Shared Passion for Baking

Blackstone Valley Bakery is the labor of love of newlyweds Nate and Emily Bach, who moved to Blackstone in November 2023, just a few months after tying the knot in Warwick, Rhode Island. Their shared passion for cooking, baking, and exploring local cafes naturally evolved into starting their own small business.
Nate, inspired by other home bakers online and by baking alongside his mom growing up, started experimenting with sourdough. When Emily’s cousin Rachael gifted them their first starter, the couple dove in—and didn’t look back.
“We only sell items that we’ve tried and loved ourselves,” they shared. “We put our hearts into everything we bake.”
Why Sourdough?
Sourdough offers more than just great flavor. The natural fermentation process makes it easier to digest and is better for gut health. It also reflects a back-to-basics philosophy: clean ingredients, made from scratch, and no shortcuts. That’s the heart of Blackstone Valley Bakery.
A Home Bakery with Local Roots
As a cottage food licensed bakery, Blackstone Valley Bakery operates under strict state and local regulations. After a home inspection, food safety certification, and close work with the Blackstone Board of Health, Nate and Emily received the go-ahead to begin selling from their home kitchen. They’re proud to meet those standards and appreciate the opportunity to bring small-batch baked goods to their community.
Local sourcing is also a big part of their mission. They’ve incorporated honey from Franklin, maple syrup from Sturbridge, and fresh eggs from Blackstone into their recipes. These choices not only support the regional economy—they improve the flavor and quality of the baked goods. The maple frosting on their oatmeal cookies is a prime example of that local love.
Community Favorites and What’s Next
In their first week, the sourdough original loaf and cheddar chive variation earned rave reviews. But it was the maple-frosted oatmeal cookies, topped with syrup from Sturbridge, that became the breakout hit.
Looking ahead, the couple plans to expand their offerings with sourdough starter kits, giving others the tools (and instructions) to try baking at home.
While they’re still early in their journey, Nate and Emily say they’ve felt nothing but support from the town. Starting a small business in Blackstone has been smooth and welcoming—a testament to the town’s neighborly spirit.

A Weekly Treat—But Not Open Daily
One thing the couple wants to be clear about: Blackstone Valley Bakery is not open every day. Porch pickup is available just once a week, and while the exact day may occasionally shift, Thursdays are currently the regular pickup day.
The next pickup is scheduled for Thursday, June 5, starting at 8:00 AM and continuing while supplies last. Check out the Small Town Post calendar for future schedules.
Address: 22 County St. Blackstone, MA 01504
To avoid disappointment (or showing up to an empty porch!), community members are encouraged to follow the Blackstone Valley Bakery Facebook page for the latest menu and pickup schedule. They also post weekly updates every Saturday on the Blackstone town Facebook page.

As Nate and Emily continue baking, they hope to keep connecting with more neighbors, learning what people love, and growing right alongside the community.
Support local. Eat fresh. Keep it simple. That’s the recipe behind Blackstone Valley Bakery, and it’s just getting started.
