Long-Awaited Repairs Underway at Blackstone Museum

Long-overdue accessibility improvements are finally underway
After years of limited access, Blackstone Museum accessibility improvements are officially underway as long-needed ramp and stairs repairs begin. Construction began this week on a project to rebuild the museum’s deteriorated ramp and stairs—an upgrade that will make the building safer and more accessible to all.
The original ramp and front steps at the Blackstone Museum have been unstable for quite some time. The structure had deteriorated so much that the Blackstone Historical Commission often couldn’t safely use the entrance, and in some cases, had to turn away visitors who relied on the ramp. For too long, this issue has prevented the museum from fully serving the community.

Funding for the project was approved at a previous Town Meeting as part of a broader initiative to repair the museum’s porches and improve accessibility. With that local support, the Town hired an architect to develop detailed construction plans. Three bids for the work were received earlier this year.
At the same time, the Town applied for a grant to supplement the budget. While awaiting a decision, officials held off on awarding the contract to maximize potential resources. However, sometime this year it was confirmed that the grant request had not been approved.
With that decision finalized, the Town moved forward with the selected contractor and finalized the agreement. This week, work officially began on the long-anticipated improvements.
These Blackstone Museum accessibility improvements are a key investment in preserving local history while creating a safer, more inclusive space for all. Visitors can look forward to a safer and more accessible experience in the months ahead.
