Millville Breaks Ground on Regional Communications Tower to Enhance Emergency Services

Millville has officially commenced construction on a new Regional Communications Tower, marking a major step forward in the town’s emergency communication infrastructure. Years in the making, this project is the result of dedicated local effort and support from regional and state-level funding sources.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place at Millville Elementary School. The location was selected for its elevation and accessibility—critical factors for improving the town’s emergency radio coverage.
Currently, many sections of Millville provide little or no reliable radio communication, posing serious risks for police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel who respond to incidents in those areas. The new tower will address these gaps by significantly improving radio coverage and interoperability among first responders. This means better communication between police, fire, and EMS departments—ultimately leading to quicker and more reliable emergency responses throughout the region.
The tower will be part of the Metacomet Emergency Communications Center (MECC), a regional dispatch hub serving Millville along with Franklin, Mendon, Norfolk, Plainville, and Wrentham. Operational since 2019, the MECC centralizes emergency dispatch services and has played a key role in modernizing how public safety agencies respond to calls for service.

This is great news for Millville and surrounding communities, and the timing couldn’t be better: this week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, an annual observance that honors the unseen heroes on the front lines of emergency communication. Their work is vital, and projects like this tower serve to support and strengthen their efforts.
Millville’s tower project is a strong example of what can be achieved through persistence, collaboration, and a shared commitment to public safety.
