Get Hooked on Tradition: Blackstone’s 41st Annual Tags and Trout Derby Returns April 26

Updated April 16, 2025 to correct names.
A beloved springtime tradition is back! The 41st Annual Tags and Trout Fishing Derby will cast off on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Attilio Valati Nature Park on Summer Street in Blackstone. This cherished event brings together kids, families, and volunteers for a morning of fishing, fun, and community spirit—and it’s all completely free, thanks to the incredible support from local organizations and businesses.
A Tradition Since 1984
The Tags and Trout Derby began in 1984, founded by John F. “Chip” DiLiberio, a proud member of the Blackstone Polish American Citizens Club. Over four decades later, the event has grown into one of Blackstone’s most anticipated youth traditions—drawing lots of young anglers each year to the scenic banks of the Mill River.
Open to local youngsters ages 4 to 14, the derby is a great way to get kids outdoors and introduce them to the joys of fishing. Whether they’re first-timers or seasoned pros, every child gets the chance to make memories that will last a lifetime.
What to Expect
Participants can register the morning of the event starting at 7:00 AM, with the tournament officially beginning at 7:30 AM and wrapping up at 10:30 AM. Pre-registration is also available at:
- Dyan’s Barber Shop (43 Farm Street, Blackstone)
- Blackstone Town Clerks Office (Town Hall)
- The Blackstone Polish American Citizens Club
Thanks to the State Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, the river will be generously stocked with trout for the occasion. Each child will receive bait and a backpack filled with fishing gear to get started. A prize is awarded for every tagged trout caught—and there are plenty of additional gifts and surprises throughout the morning, including a raffle with fantastic prizes donated by local merchants.
Parental supervision is required for all participants.
RAIN OR SHINE!
Food, Prizes, and Community Spirit
In addition to fishing, families can enjoy complimentary hot dogs, donuts, hot chocolate, water, juice, milk, and even ice cream—making the derby a true community celebration. Prizes include bicycles, hoverboards, headphones, remote control cars, Lego sets, and more age-appropriate gifts, ensuring every young angler has a chance to go home with something special.
The event wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated effort of the Tags and Trout Committee, based at the Blackstone Polish Club, along with generous help from the Blackstone Lions Club, Blackstone Parks & Recreation, and the Blackstone Highway Department. Their hard work, along with the generous donations of time, goods, and services from local volunteers and businesses, ensures that this heartwarming event continues year after year.
